MUSICIANS, dancers, singers, street theatre players, entertainers and artists from many nations, as well as local celebrities, will provide four days of family fun at Folkestone’s fourth Multi-Cultural Festival which opens on Thursday (June 11).
The 50-event festival, organised by Folkestone Town Centre Management, will be staged at various venues in the town centre, Creative Quarter and harbour area, and, as well as lively entertainment, will include children’s activities, creative workshops, arts, crafts and cooking demonstrations, food samplings and stalls selling food, delicacies, sweets and flowers. New this year are ‘fringe’ events, including a ‘family day’ at the Lower Leas Coastal Park Amphitheatre.
More than 400 primary school children will get the festival under way when they take part in a day of creative workshops at Quarterhouse and University Centre, while stage entertainment will go on from 11am to 3pm in the
Precinct, near Debenhams.
Friday events start at 10am in both the Precinct and at the Bouverie Place Shopping Centre. As part of the ‘fringe’ programme, a Micro Music Festival, featuring artists, musicians and comedians flitting between venues in the Old Town, starts at 7.30.
There will be a full programme of music and dance on town centre stages from 10am on Saturday, with a Dance Off at Quarterhouse at 8pm.
Sunday events will include a six-hour ‘family day’ at the Lower Leas Coastal Park Amphitheatre, starting at 2.30pm, Opera by the Sea – ‘easy listening to well-loved classics’ – from 5.30 to 8.30.
On every day of the festival, Terlingham Vineyard, near Hawkinge, will welcome visitors from 2pm to 4pm.
Says FTCM events organiser Barbara Witham: “We’ve got a really great programme lined up – something for everybody and mostly free. It’s going to be the biggest, brightest and most exciting festival yet. We are expecting thousands of visitors. Fingers crossed that the weather will be kind”.
